[Book of verse]. ca. 1850?-1863.

Epple was a member of the Harmony Society and recorded religious verse in this blank book. The first 77 p. contain undated verse in a spidery Fraktur handwriting. The subsequent pages are either blank or contain various records and accounts in other hands. These are dated from 1857 to 1863.

The original German, utopian community, Harmonie Society, arrived in Pennsylvania in the 1780s, relocated to New Harmony, Indiana, in 1814. It established a final home, Economy, near Ambridge, in western Pennsylvania, in 1825. The Society prospered through 1868, dissolving itself in 1905 after membership declined.
